What is Wegovy® (semaglutide)?
Wegovy® (semaglutide) is a game-changer for weight management and metabolic health. It mimics a natural hormone our bodies make (GLP-1 analogs), to help regulate blood sugar, curb appetite, and support sustainable weight loss.
Here’s how it works:
- Reduces Hunger & Cravings – Targets appetite centers in the brain to naturally curb food intake
- Enhances Fullness & Satisfaction – Slows digestion so you feel full longer with smaller meals
- Promotes Fat Loss – Aids in losing excess fat, including stubborn belly fat, which is common during menopause, for better body composition
- Supports Healthy Insulin Levels – Helps your pancreas release the right amount of insulin when blood sugar is high
- Balances Blood Sugar – Lowers sugar production in the liver and improves insulin response.

In addition to the consult fee, there is a monthly membership fee of $39. Your membership includes monthly wellness check-ins, ongoing support and guidance, and 24/7 messaging with your doctor. - What is a GLP-1 medication, and how does it work?+
GLP-1 medications help regulate blood sugar and support weight loss by slowing digestion, reducing appetite, and improving insulin function. They are approved for type 2 diabetes and for weight management if you have obesity or are overweight with related health conditions. Read more >
- Can I take GLP-1 medication with Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT)?+
Yes! There are no contraindications for the two medications to be used simultaneously. In fact, some early data shows that there could be benefits to using GLP-1s and MHT together. MHT has been shown to result in better distribution of body fat.
And a recent study showed that women who were taking semaglutide and MHT had better weight loss results compared to women taking semaglutide who were not on MHT. While there have not yet been similar studies with liraglutide or tirzepetide, the potential for a beneficial relationship is promising. Read more >
- Do I need a prescription for GLP-1 medications?+
Yes, a prescription is required. You will be assigned an expert physician who will review your symptoms and medical history, and determine if you are a fit for a GLP-1 medication. You'll be able to message your doctor any time as long as your membership is active.
- What is the difference between Alloy’s offerings and other telehealth companies?+
With Alloy, you get 24/7 access to menopause-trained doctors who understand that midlife weight gain is no one’s fault, and is treatable with clinically proven, effective medication. And for women also taking MHT, some early data shows that there could be benefits to using GLP-1s and MHT together. After an online consultation with your doctor, you’ll receive an individualized care plan that supports your weight loss journey. And you’ll have access to support groups and a community of women going through similar experiences.

-
- How much weight can I expect to lose, and when will I start to see results?+
- Average weight loss is 8-15% or so of body weight over 6-12 months, depending on your medication
- Some people lose more, some less—it depends on metabolism, lifestyle, and response to medication
- Weight loss is gradual; long-term weight stabilization happens over time
- You’ll experience some appetite changes within a few weeks
- Most patients experience noticeable weight loss in 3-6 months
- How long will I need to be on a GLP-1 medication and will I regain weight if I stop?+
It depends on your health goals and how your body responds. For patients with obesity and diabetes, the medication is intended to be used long term. Some people will use it long-term, while others stop or taper down once they reach a healthy weight. You and your doctor will reassess as you go. There’s a good chance you’ll regain some weight if you stop. This medication helps control appetite, so if you stop, you and your doctor will need a plan to maintain your progress through diet and lifestyle changes.
- What is the difference between brand name GLP-1s and a compounded liraglutide?+
Compounded liraglutide, semaglutide, and tirzepatide are all GLP-1 medications, but they’re not identical. Each works differently and has its own dosing schedule, effectiveness, and uses for weight loss.
-
Compounded liraglutide: A once-daily injection, compounded liraglutide mimics the GLP-1 hormone to reduce appetite and slow digestion. It was the first GLP-1 medication approved for weight management and typically leads to 5-10% total body weight loss over time. To read more about compounded liraglutide, click here.
-
Semaglutide (Wegovy®): A more potent GLP-1 agonist, semaglutide is taken once weekly and results in an average weight loss of 10-15% total body weight. Wegovy® is specifically FDA-approved for weight loss.
-
Tirzepatide (Zepbound®): This once-weekly injection is a dual agonist, targeting both GLP-1 and GIP receptors to enhance weight loss results. On average, tirzepatide can lead to 15-20% total body weight loss.
